The organisers really brought Shalowan to life, the layout of the event and the exhibitions were cleverly designed and well thought through. There were lots of diverse activities, the staff were enthusiastic and created a great atmosphere, even the indigenous villagers took part. Altogether, we enjoyed a happy family day out.

I was so grateful to have been a facilitator which allowed me to interact with the artists directly. It was great to chat with them about their views on the relationship between men and nature. Plus I had a chance to be a simultaneous interpreter and in the process discovered something new about myself.

The programme allowed students to learn beyond the classroom, to experience new things for themselves on a practical level as in real life. It gave them a sense of fun and new

“Arts for Change” Project

The “Arts for Change” project has the ultimate goal of empowering social workers, young people and youth organisations to become effective change-makers through the power of the arts. Led by AFTEC, a diverse range of local professional artists co-designed and co-created with social workers and young people from three NGOs, this three-year pilot programme focused on creating meaningful and impactful community projects.

When you look through the prism of the arts in discussions between the artists and social workers, you really gain a greater appreciation of the arts.

I enjoyed working and creating with everyone, because with different viewpoints from the group we can put our minds together and create something even better.

Working with young people elevated me. I felt humility in my own learning and made some breakthroughs through the activities.

I learned to use my imagination to design our playground, but we also had to think about how to make it look appealing too. I am going to encourage others to practice using their imaginations by playing games and doing quizzes.

The artists show us how to think out of the box; we social workers then try to understand it and figure out our common aims. This means when artists ask questions or propose solutions, the social workers can then work together with the young people how best to achieve the solutions.

Obviously you can't just take part in one activity once; learning and improving are accumulative. Whether in life or in the programme, you observe and notice those around you, what they're doing and what their results are. Then you start to think, actually it means that I can do it too.

The artists are able to elevate the students' skills through their teaching methods. Social workers can help the young people manage their behaviour and emotions, so that they can learn to feel, think, learn and gain more through the experience.

Although I always find it important to empathise with others' feelings and difficulties, it's the first time for me to realise how much difference a few sentences of mine could make. Therefore, I would now be more aware of each and every sentence coming out of my mouth. No matter in daily or clinical scenarios to show my empathy.

Kindness is the psychological and mental thoughts that a doctor should possess. However sharing kindness is the physical interaction between people. I will use the body posture techniques and vocal tone to deliver my sympathy and kindness to others.
