Cancelled Theatre Production (Due to social unrest)

With not much time for rehearsals, I understood how important taking the initiative was. In previous roles I just followed the director's or teacher's instructions as I am new to this. But in this production because of limited rehearsals, there was not enough time to try things out or think too much. So it became important for the actors to develop a more proactive approach, staying focused and even giving our thoughts and opinions.

The programme has taught me that we are all capable of achieving great things as long as we put our all into it. I was able to expand my horizons and find my own, unique voice because of Bravo! It encouraged me to become more confident and allowed me to find joy in self-expression through the arts.

Sm-ART Youth Project 2019-20

Through constant year-round exposure to diverse arts disciplines in and outside of the classroom, Sm-ART Youth project enables 80 underprivileged primary students from four primary schools to nurture a questioning habit of mind, to understand the self and beyond, and to locate meaning in their young lives. During the outbreak of COVID-19 and school suspension, Sm-ART Youth makes full use of the online interactive platform to communicate and explore the art of life with students, thereby inspiring thinking.

A few students in my class who were always quite reluctant to speak or express themselves became more proactive and less shy after taking part in the programme. Now they will raise their hands to answer questions in class, or even come to me during recess and tell me how they feel and what happened that day all by themselves. What a change.

Students are doing really well in self-learning, multisensory and experiential learning. They tried to use other methods to communicate and collaborate, to work together. Both students and teachers learned a lot from Sm-ART during the year. Their teaching method acts as a reference for my own teaching and really helps my professional development.

We took the lesson outdoors. The Sm-ART Youth tutors prepared a number of recycled cardboard tubes as the primary creative tool. The kids discovered it could be used as a listening device, they used it everywhere with great curiosity. It was a great opportunity to nurture their creativity and get them fully involved in the activity.

We can actually create art ourselves. I really love weird and wonderful things in particular. When I'm feeling down, creating something weird and wonderful always makes me feel better.

Project 2019-20 — The Absolutely
Fabulous Theatre Connection
“Arts for Empowerment”

This is a 44-month project focusing on developing an art-based curriculum in conversation with teachers, social workers and students from schools for Social Development from 2019 to 2022. As part of the Special Education Needs system, AFTEC created a diverse educational space for the teachers, social workers and students for the two involving schools: Tung Wan Mok Law Shui Wah School and Caritas Mother Teresa School, as well as to assist the former in developing black box theatre.

This project broadens the artistic horizon for teachers and students through Cultural Days, Foundation workshops for teachers and London exchange tour. “Arts for Change” was adopted as an alternative approach to facilitate students' self-understanding and the development of their unique potentials through applying the unique power of the arts to foster layered and nuanced emotional connections.

I particularly like making props and storytelling in AFTEC classes. We got to use our imagination, be creative and break free from the usual restrictions. During the process, I learned to play different roles and about story development. My classmates and I had so much fun during AFTEC lessons learning new things together.

AFTEC classes make me so happy – I really enjoyed the activities, games and learning about make-up. The professional techniques I learned were so interesting and fun. By comparison normal classes are so boring now because it's all just about the academics. I think my friendships got deeper during AFTEC classes. We developed an interest in watching plays during the cultural outings. I never used to be interested but now I will actually watch them in my free time!

Theatre can really bring joy to people. During AFTEC classes, the tutor really encouraged me to try new things, like creating MV. The experience was so unique and it made me so happy. I hope I can apply the knowledge to other parts of my life.

After participating in the professional development workshops, my thinking towards my own teaching has changed somewhat. At different stages I reflected on my previous methods of teaching. Now I observe and listen more to the students, for instance I notice their reactions more and then make the necessary adjustments. Sometimes I listen to their opinions and change the pace of my teaching.

I am going to sharpen my observation skills while working at the school to try and understand the students more. In particular, their body language and emotional state. This will help me become a better teacher because I will be better at reacting and handling a situation according to what I have observed.

With drama activities, I can think outside the box and even common items, such as simple chairs, can be used as a teaching aid. Having an open mind can help me be more creative and find new ways to solve problems.

We can apply the knowledge from the professional development workshops in class. Many of our subjects during class need to show the process of thought development, but not just from one angle. Opinions should be considered from multiple perspectives to give an all-rounded view and analysis. Our feelings and learning to develop them are a vital element to social interaction.

After taking part in the workshop, I really admired how tolerant and accepting the tutors were. Given that there are no rules in the arts, things can develop in any direction. It made me reflect on the gulf between the Hong Kong educational system and what young people need to learn. The system only allows for one correct and specific answer but the arts are all about creativity. If mainstream teaching doesn't suit students, the arts is not just an alternative – it's actually of huge benefit to our students that they can find inspiration and acceptance.
